Birds of Paradise

With the recent advent of sunshine in Utah Valley, I have gotten to pondering. The following is (to coin a phrase) a ponderment.

For Christmas the Finlinsons got this awesome Discovery Channel series called Planet Earth on DVD. In it there is this cool segment about these birds of paradise that have beautiful plumage and dance these awkward (though amusing) dances to find a mate.

While these birds are intriguing, I have found that I do not need to travel to exotic New Guinea to see such displays. The HFAC at BYU provides a comparable and equally exotic setting for watching the mating "dances" of another species entirely: homo zoobus more commonly know as the Zoobie. Of late, I have made some observations that seriously concern me as to the survival of the species.

Case in point: The male zoobus.

So there I was in the HFAC at BYU. I was sitting at a bench when a male zoobus comes and sits next to this girl. He looks to be of RM age. Through the course of the conversation he compliments the girl he is talking to on being a mature freshman then he continues to explain how he likes freshmen ever since he lived in the dorms a couple years ago (which was when he was 26!). Then he finished off the conversation by defending the reasons that he lives with his mother to this (at best) mildly interested girl. His argument was that he isn't emotionally attached. Well it wasn't too long until the girl flew out of there.

To make matters worse, the disgruntled look on his face was all too telling: he was, in fact, attemting to flirt with this girl. Sometimes I find it miraculous that our species is even able to survive.

Gentle parker: beware the Lurker

So, I just finished another pre-law lecture and once again I was told that I need to write to learn to better express myself and more intelligently convey my ideas or emote on paper if you will....

....whatever.

Well I have spun the wheel of emotions and today I am feeling.....annoyed. Mostly I've had something that's been bugging me for some time now. It is yet another quirky element of the microcosmos that is BYU.

As of late, I have been particularly annoyed with parking here on campus. It could have been my start of semester $90 of parking tickets but somehow I think it runs deeper than that.

The source of my frustration comes from recent experience in the parking lots surrounding this institution of higher learning. Amazingly (and this truly is amazing), the students of this fine university have devolved into hunters and gatherers. It is almost as if thousands of years of civic evolution have come to naught. Perhaps this is born of necessity. After all, if I have learned something from my weekly three hour snooze fest under the pseudo-name "History of Creativity" it is that creativity is born of necessity especially when the society has leisure time. This being the case, the current parking situation has created a new breed of driver: The Lurker.

In any other place around town, the Lurker is a normal and even courteous driver. However, when he reaches BYU campus particularly after 8 am when all the parking stalls are filled, he, in his desperate search for a parking stall, will turn into a crazed stalker. I have had several experiences with these new animals made even more ferocious by the ton of metal, gears, and rubber in which he is encased. I kid you not, one afternoon I had one such lurker follow me from the Richard's Building to the back of its massive parking lot at very low speeds. This creep just crept along behind me pretending like this was the most normal thing that any adult his age would be doing.

The most appalling of their tactics is manifest when they think they may be caught in the act of lurking because as soon as you turn your head to figure out why anyone would be creeping along behind you, they put on the guise of an average 20-somthing-year-old driver traveling at speeds under 1 mph who just so happens to be changing his radio station. As if he's fooling me!

All I can say is, you can have my parking spot but please don't insult my intelligence!!

There.....I emoted.
